Peer Support Worker

Most recently, METRAC’s priority groups have expanded to include Two-Spirit, transgender, and nonbinary people, also known to be impacted by higher rates of gender-based violence. METRAC partners with individuals, communities, and institutions, to change ideas, actions and policies toward ending gender-based violence. Our activities are focused on public education, legal information services, youth prevention programs, community safety audits, community-based research and social policy initiatives designed to improve systemic responses to gender-based violence.

The TransFormed Project: Addressing Partner Violence from Two-Spirit, Nonbinary and Trans Perspectives is a successful, community-based research and action initiative led by METRAC: Action on Violence in partnership with the Centre Francophone. The Project’s goal was to remove barriers to health care and social services for Two-Spirit, Nonbinary and Trans survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). This collaborative project brought together community members affected by IPV, researchers, health and social sector professionals of multi-service agencies with mandates to address IPV through prevention and intervention strategies. This position is designed to build on the early work of the TransFormed Project and to respond to research findings and the need for culturally competent services for Two-Spirit, nonbinary and trans people affected by IPV.

Position summary

Guided by the TransFormed Project Peer Coordinator (PC), the TransFormed Peer Support Worker (PSW) will draw on the research findings from the TransFormed Project to support the development and launch of an Online Peer Support Program and Healthy Relationship curriculum for Two-Spirit, Nonbinary and Trans (2SNT) communities.  The TransFormed PSW will be responsible for co-facilitating the online program utilizing a respectful, anti-racism, anti-oppression lens. The PSW will help to increase participants’ knowledge and understanding of how to prevent violence in personal and peer relationships, families and communities.  Participants will learn about warning signs of intimate partner violence, healthy relationships, how to access help and support each other.  The PSW will assist with conducting online outreach to connect members of the community to participate in the program.


  • Work with the TransFormed Program Coordinator (TPC) to build and develop an online peer education support group and Healthy, Equal Relationships program curriculum.
  • Develop an outline of goals, objectives, activities, outcomes and needed supplies for delivering Peer Facilitated high quality online programming for Two Spirit, Trans and Nonbinary people.
  • Conduct online outreach to engage Two Spirit, Nonbinary and Trans people in a newly launched online program.
  • Co-facilitate online workshops focused on current issues affecting diverse members of the Two-Spirit, nonbinary and trans community facing intimate partner violence (IPV) and barriers to accessing resources.
  • Assist with research for program development, ensuring the integration of Two-Spirit, Nonbinary and Trans-centered approaches.
  • Support the design and development of relevant new program resources and workshop content.
  • Support the development of 2SNT-friendly social media resources on topics related to safety, mental health, healthy relationships, justice, services for 2SNT people
  • Conduct outreach and offer facilitated workshops/professional development services to interested partners and organization seeking to improve services to Two-Spirit, Nonbinary and Trans people.
  • Support the development of data collection strategies to evaluate the program (i.e. surveys, tracking and entering data and analyzing it for informing program development).
  • Other duties as required.

Summary of qualifications

  • Lived experience and or experience working with Two-Spirit, Nonbinary and Trans Communities
  • Experience conducting outreach to promote resources and program is an asset
  • Strong facilitation and peer support skills
  • Strong analysis of and comfort with challenging gender-based violence, and discrimination/oppression issues (e.g. racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, and ableism) within a Two-Spirit, Nonbinary and Trans centered model
  • Experience in developing online social media content and resources
  • Experience utilizing online platforms and tools such as: Zoom, Canva, PowerPoint, Kahoot, Instagram
  • A desire to make a positive difference in your community
  • A solid understanding of human rights issues, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, anti-oppression, peer education and popular education is an asset
  • Dedication to maintaining a positive image of METRAC and the TransFormed Project in the online program environment
  • Written and spoken fluency in English and other languages are strong assets
  • Comfortable engaging in public speaking especially with Two-Spirit, Nonbinary and Trans community members
  • Flexible schedule required (e.g. days, evenings, weekdays, weekends)
  • Creativity and enthusiasm; reliability; willingness to learn; openness.

Hours of work

35 hours per week, $15.00 per hour

NOTE: This position is funded by The Government of Canada and the City of Toronto. We are hiring 1 Peer Support Worker for our summer program which is 35 hours per week for 8 weeks in July-August 2021.  Part-time employment may be available based on funding after the summer program is completed.
