About

METRAC’s Community Justice Program provides relevant and easy-to-understand legal information training for service providers who support diverse and vulnerable women.

These January 2016 trainings will take an in-depth look at how domestic violence is dealt with in the Ontario legal system. They build on our past trainings on specialized Domestic Violence Courts and are designed for service providers, community leaders, and anyone in the Greater Toronto Area who wants to learn more about Ontario’s domestic violence legal system.

Supported by City of Toronto and Law Foundation of Ontario.

Training Day 1: Women Charged with Partner Assault

Date: Thursday January 14, 2016
Time: 12:45 to 5:00 PM (registration begins at 12:30 PM)
Facilitated by: Tamar Witelson, METRAC’s Legal Director with a panel of expert guest speakers

The afternoon begins with a brief overview about what happens when women are charged with intimate partner assault – understanding the differences when women and men are charged with domestic assault and thinking about what has to change. Other presentations include:

  • Toronto Police Services will explain the mandatory charging policy and how it is applied when women are charged in a domestic assault
  • We will also learn about the Partner Assault Response (PAR) program for women accused, and discuss strengths and challenges
  • Legal Aid Ontario will explain changes to Legal Aid for women charged with domestic assault

Training Day 2: Assaulted Women: Risk and Protection

Date: Wednesday January 27, 2016
Time: 12:45 to 5:00 PM (registration begins at 12:30 PM)
Facilitated by: Tamar Witelson, METRAC’s Legal Director with expert guest speakers

The afternoon begins with a snapshot of the Domestic Violence Courts, reported by the Courtwatch Project. In a group discussion, we will share stories about positive observations and concerns, and explore whether women are finding protection in the Ontario Court System. Other presentations include:

  • What happens when an accused is released before trial? What are bail, Peace Bonds, and revocable consent all about?
  • How is the Partner Assault Response (PAR) program protecting women complainants, and what services are provided in the Toronto area?
  • How is probation and parole designed to protect women, after a convicted abuser is released back into the community?
