METRAC’s Community Safety Program provides training, workshops, and educational materials on personal and community safety in the diverse communities of Toronto. We work with community members to make everyone feel safer, reduce public violence, and increase community cohesion. In 1989, we were the first to develop the Safety Audit Process© in Canada, a method to evaluate the environment from the standpoint of those who feel the most vulnerable to violence and to make changes that reduce opportunities for assault. We work with individuals, community groups and organizations, government agencies, police, educational institutions, development companies, and the medical profession in drafting recommendations and developing long term safety plans and actions for safer communities. We are currently working in partnership with the City of Toronto to provide training and implementation of Community Safety Audits across the city, including the thirteen (13) priority neighbourhoods. This program coordinates the activities of THRIVE, the Multicultural Women’s Coalition Against Violence and Oppression, a coalition of several women's and anti-violence organizations. Driven by a vision of long-term systemic change, THRIVE works to address all forms of violence that women of colour and Aboriginal women face. |
