In 2000 and 2001, METRAC and the Toronto Police Service have co-sponsored three conferences
on the topic of criminal harassment. Each conference brought together approximately 120
people -- police officers, women's service providers, lawyers working for the Crown
Attorney's office, social assistance workers, and public housing staff.
Keynote speakers addressed critical issues relating to criminal harassment:
- What is the law and how does it work?
- How can stalking victims and their advocates assist the police investigating
these cases and the Crown in prosecuting them?
- What are the flaws in the law and why do many women never report?
- What are the different stalker typologies and what does this mean about the
level of danger presented by different stalkers?
As well, participants had the opportunity to interact with one another and to learn
more about services in the Toronto area by attending a resource fair. The second and
third conferences used an interactive theatrical presentation by Mixed Company to
stimulate discussion and thought among participants.
