In 2007, METRAC published its unique handbooks for women who had experienced sexual assault. They explain the strengths and weaknesses
of the criminal system, as well as outline the steps a woman could expect to go through if she decided to report her sexual assault to the police.
Sexual Assault: An Introduction to the Law
What women who have been sexually assaulted should know about the law.
This is the first guidebook in the series, titled Sexual Assault: A Introduction
to the Law. It provides a definition of sexual assault and an
overview of the various legal options available to survivors of sexual assault as well as
an analysis of each of these options and a list of resources.
This guidebook will be of interest and use to service providers as well as women
recovering from a sexual assault, whether that assault happened recently or in the past.

Sexual Assault: A Guide to the Criminal System
For women as they make their way through the maze of criminal court
The second in METRAC’s series on sexual assault and the law, this guidebook delves
into the intricacies of the criminal system. It is intended for those women, and
their service providers and supporters, who are considering or who have made the
decision to report their assault to the police.
Issues addressed include: what is involved in making a report to the police, what can
happen at the hospital if evidence is gathered through a “rape kit,” the
roles of key court officials, including the Crown Attorney and the
Victim/Witness Assistance Program and what happens in a trial. A glossary defines many of
the most commonly used criminal terms in easy to understand language.
The guidebook lets women know what to expect -- good and bad -- and makes
suggestions for how women can get the support they need if they decide to report
their assault to the police.
