The Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children works towards the goal of eliminating all forms of violence against all women and children. METRAC is committed to the right of all women and children to live their lives free of violence and the threat of violence.
METRAC’s work is informed by anti-oppression principles which recognize that women and children within and among diverse communities experience violence in different ways and different forms, and which recognize that anti-violence measures must address the distinctive realities of women and children within and among diverse communities.
METRAC is a catalyst for change, an educator and an advocate. We work to challenge societal acceptance of violence against women and children, to bring about improvements in support services and advocacy systems, and to generate changes in institutions, public policy and legislation. We seek to identify the need for action and to determine appropriate solutions to violence against all women and children in Toronto. We are committed to the development of research grounded in the experiences of all women and children. We promote education of the public, of professionals and of public officials on the causes of violence against all women and children, and appropriate solutions to violence against all women and children.
METRAC uses an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach wherever possible. We work together and in partnership with:
- agents of change at the municipal, provincial and federal level;
- other community-based organizations, including those focusing on domestic violence; and
- educators, urban planners, police, health and legal professionals.
